Today was the penultimate day in my current place of employment.  The team I work with, and I, are being transferred over to another employer on Thursday, and today was the day when we had to clear out our office.  Tomorrow will be our last team meeting in our, now, very empty working space.   The experience has prompted a little poem:

TODAY WE EMPTIED OUR OFFICE

Today we emptied our office
Memories of work through the years
Memories of laughter and hard work
All piled into confidential waste bags

Today we emptied our office
Emptied drawers of our personal stuff
Removed posters and work plans from walls
Clearing all trace of our existence

Today we emptied our office
The photocopier – redundant – removed
Unwanted furniture – collected – rehomed
Our memories packed up and archived

Today we emptied our office
Tomorrow the phones are switched off
Our laptops and phones relinquished
Our work tools to be taken back

It’s really a new beginning
A time full of possibility and hope
We’ll have new employers on Thursday
Then it’s ‘carry on as you were’
